Cole Tierney

The PDP-8 was the first computer I ever met (high school circa 1980). My first assignment was to write a program that would multiply 2 by 3. The catch was that we had to use the binary rocker switches on the front panel to enter the commands! This is how I learned true respect for higher level languages like lingo (not to mention that useful device known as a keyboard!).

Before getting paid to play with computers, I had served as a drummer in the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. After the army, I studied computer science at George Mason University and then in my home state at the University of Vermont.

I now work for Laureate Learning Systems in Winooski, VT where we create software for language development. The company was founded in 1982 and I joined them 8 years later. First as an artist and then shortly afterwards as a programmer (assembly with applesoft basic). I started working with Director in 1995. These days I'm senior developer and network administrator. My sysadmin experiences have drawn me into the unix realm, which inspired my first article at Doug. Here's a corner of my website where I share code snippets with the rest of the director community.
